The Gransfors Bruks Wildlife Hatchet is an excellent axe for campfire work, and despite its size it can manage a lot.
A popular pack and waist axe for use about camp, good for roughing out spoons too. Small enough to go on your belt or in a day pack.
● For cutting small branches in the garden
● Chopping and splitting sticks for a camp fire
● Roughing out spoons and bowls
● A handy pack or belt axe
This is Gransfors second most popular axe. If we are out of stock we recommed the Hultafors Hultan hatchet as an alternative.. This is made by Hultafors, this is slightly longer and a similar weight with a more curved edge and thicker blade than the Gransfors Wildlife hatchet.
● Length with handle: 35 cm (13.5")
● Head Weight: 0,6 kg (1.3 lb)
● Cutting edge:
7.5cm (3")Due to its compact size it could be very tempting to little hands if there are kids around, so keep an eye on it or show them how to be safe and supervise them.
Common Questions
What is the Gransfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet 415 for?
It is a traditional scouting and camping axe with the same head as the Hand Hatchet on a longer handle, which gives it more power. It can lop off quite large branches or split small logs for the campfire, and it is small enough to carry in a rucksack.
How big and heavy is it?
It is about 35cm (13.5 inches) long and weighs about 0.6kg, with a hickory handle.
Can I carry it in my rucksack?
Yes. The sheath is shaped to cover the edge and the top of the poll, which stops the axe head cutting into your rucksack.
Wildlife Hatchet, Hand Hatchet or Small Forest Axe?
The Hand Hatchet 413 has the same head on a shorter 24cm handle, so it packs smaller. The Wildlife Hatchet has the longer handle, so it chops harder. For more power again, the Small Forest Axe 420 has a 49cm handle and a larger head.
What comes with it?
A vegetable-tanned leather sheath and Gransfors Bruk's axe book. Gransfors Bruk gives a 20-year warranty on its axes, so keep your receipt.
How do I look after it, and can I get a replacement handle?
Gransfors Bruk recommends oiling the axe head before you put it away for any length of time, treating the handle with Gransfors oil once a year, and checking regularly that the head is firmly on the handle. We stock the Gransfors Axe Care Kit, which includes oil, wax and the dual-grade ceramic axe stone, as well as the linseed oil and leather sheath wax separately. For other sharpening options there is the diamond sharpener and a natural whetstone, plus spare sheaths. For the handle, we stock a genuine replacement handle, and handles for most of the range.
Can I see one before I buy?
Yes. We stock more than 35 Gransfors Bruk axes and tools, and carry a large selection in our shop in Llangollen, so you can handle them and compare sizes before you choose. You can also order online and collect in store with Click and Collect, or browse the full Gransfors Bruk range.
