The everyday splitting axe for wood rounds for taller people. Also preferred by tree surgeons that split rounds on the job without a chopping block
The Gransfors Bruks Large Splitting Axe is designed for splitting larger chunks of wood, or "rounds". Forged and ground to a concave, quite thin blade at the bit, this design helps the axe to go fast into the wood, and then efficiently split as the broader section pushes apart the wood.
The axe head is quite heavy with forged cheeks on both sides of the blade, "splitting wedge shaped crests" which power apart the grain of the wood. A Splitting Axe does not just have to slice into the wood, the thick axe blade pushes apart the wood.
A protective steel collar is positioned beneath the axe head to guard against overstrikes. The handle features a deliberately roughened grip to enhance traction, while the upper shaft is kept smooth. The poll of this axe, like the poll on most axes, is definitely not designed for heavy pounding on a wedge.
The axe has a 3" face and a 79cm hickory handle and the head weighs 2.4 kg.

Common Questions
What is the Gransfors Bruk Long Handled Splitting Axe 445 for?
It is for splitting all types of firewood, including big rounds. The blade is forged to a concave, quite thin edge that bites in quickly, and the broader section behind it pushes the wood apart. The longer handle suits taller people and gives you extra leverage.
How big and heavy is it?
The hickory handle gives an overall length of about 79cm (31 inches), and the axe weighs about 2.4kg. The handle has a steel collar below the head and grooves near the end for an extra firm grip.
Can I use it to hammer a wedge?
No. Gransfors Bruk says splitting axes should not be used for striking a wedge or as a wedge, and that only the Splitting Maul 450 is designed for it.
Which splitting axe should I choose?
The 445 has the long 79cm handle. The Large Splitting Axe 442 has the same head on a shorter 70cm handle and suits most people. The Splitting Maul 450 is the heaviest and can be struck. For smaller jobs there are the Small Splitting Axe 441 and the Splitting Hatchet 439.
What comes with it?
A vegetable-tanned leather sheath and Gransfors Bruk's axe book. Gransfors Bruk gives a 20-year warranty on its axes, so keep your receipt.
How do I look after it, and can I get a replacement handle?
Gransfors Bruk recommends oiling the axe head before you put it away for any length of time, treating the handle with Gransfors oil once a year, and checking regularly that the head is firmly on the handle. We stock the Gransfors Axe Care Kit, which includes oil, wax and the dual-grade ceramic axe stone, as well as the linseed oil and leather sheath wax separately. For other sharpening options there is the diamond sharpener and a natural whetstone, plus spare sheaths. For the handle, we stock a genuine replacement handle, and handles for most of the range.
Can I see one before I buy?
Yes. We stock more than 35 Gransfors Bruk axes and tools, and carry a large selection in our shop in Llangollen, so you can handle them and compare sizes before you choose. You can also order online and collect in store with Click and Collect, or browse the full Gransfors Bruk range.
