Our Gear Story in 2018 – A year in the outdoors

Far too often, outdoor equipment is commoditised and starts it’s post-shelf life as ‘a good deal’. We’re all guilty of buying something on a whim because it looks cool and isn’t too pricey.

But to us at ProAdventure, providing great gear, great customer service and great advice is all a part of what we do (with the handy side effect that we make just enough money to get outdoors and enjoy ourselves too!).

When you buy something from ProAdventure, you are supporting a group of highly committed outdoors people, enthusiasts and professional and voluntary guides and coaches. We couldn’t do what we do without your purchases supporting our everyday financial needs, so thank you for loving to get outside and contributing to our fun too!

Here’s what you have helped make happen in 2018:

Pete

I go white water kayaking 3 times a week in summer and once or twice in the winter. Look out for an Orange Jackson Mixmaster slicing around the river Dee; That’s me!

Pete Slicing up the River Dee

I’ve spent a few days walking in the mountains with my eldest, Bethany, and a week in North Yorkshire walking on family holiday. I also spent an excellent week white water rafting in Scotland.

Clive

My summer was spent between the shop, the back seat of many rafts and the limestone crags on the Panorama above Llangollen. Long summer evenings climbing after a day on the water were my jam!

I’ve recently returned to paddling Class 5 after an injury. With a shiny new boat (or two…) I’ve spent multiple days paddling laps of the Fairy Glen, Afon Lledr, Afon LLugwy, Afon Mawddach and Cynfal, to name just a few.

I’m still working hard on my climbing, training for a headpoint attempt of The Great Wall (E4) at Clogwyn Du’r Arddu in Snowdonia.

Ray

As well as being the area Scouts Rock Climbing Assessor and D of E expedition assessor, I get out climbing every week in the local area. This year also saw several trips in the mountains of Snowdonia, the Lake District and Scottish Highlands in preparation for my Mountain Leader assessment which I passed!

Tom

Mountain biking once a week anywhere between Nantyr Forest and Worlds End/Llandegla Forest. Also a summer glamping trip to Shell Island and lots of local dog walking around Glyndyfrdwy.

Lesley

I get out walking in the Dee Valley most days, sometimes Nordic Walking. I also do some open canoeing, and in 2018 did some experimentation with stand up paddle boarding.

Bethany

After the latter half of an excellent ski season ended in Pneumonia, I qualified as a Raft guide and spent the summer on the Dee, kayaking, climbing, running, cycling and exploring in every spare moment.

I spent a month kayaking in BC, Canada then moved to St Andrews for university, opening the door to new adventures in Scotland. So far, I’ve kayaked many new rivers and had an amazing mountaineering trip to the Black Cuillin of Skye.

Bethan

You may have met Bethan in the shop in the Summer or over Christmas. In between terms studying Medicine at Cambridge, Bethan has been on numerous climbing trips to Scottish islands, Cornwall and Snowdonia. She is a strong part of her college’s rowing squad, both behind the oar and in the cox seat, and is also the Sports Officer for Homerton. She also went on an awesome snowboarding trip to Val Thorens in France and can often be spotted out running.

Ange

Ange recently joined the team, another professional instructor and coach, she has just been selected for the GB two women’s rafting team from 2019, competing in Bosnia for the european championships later this year. Since moving to North Wales she has sparked an interest in pretty much anything outdoors, from on the water, to climbing, or simply enjoying the countryside walks with her dog.

Sustainability

We’ve also worked hard on sustainability issues over the last year (and long before), all our electricity comes from renewable sources. We no longer buy any packaging containing plastic. Our lighting is almost all low energy LED and we are constantly reviewing the environmental impact when making product choices.
