"It's not too bad so far, the wetsuit feels alien and the helmet strap digs in a little, but better safe than sorry! There are seven of us altogether, plus our guide, Paul. We had a look at the river before booking in and I know there is more interesting water to come. Grade 4 they call this, on a scale from 1 to 6, where 1 is flat and 6 can kill. It's a technical river this, if a little short - some experienced raft guides find its narrow, rocky turns hard to come to terms with, but all the guides on here are safe and qualified. The safety record is excellent. "What's that Paul, this next bit's called the Graveyard?". We paddle the rubber raft (self-bailing so we're told) back into the flow and round the corner, suddenly it changes from 1 to 4, "Hard forward, Hard, Hard, Hard, Lean in, Hold on!" he shouts as we cross the river and drop into a foaming channel, missing rocks by inches, into the Graveyard proper. Rocks surround us as Paul steers and shouts over the raging water which way to paddle and when to hold on tight. The Graveyard ends, it's quiet again, no need to shout. We're in an eddy above the Ski Slope, the biggest drop on this white water rollercoaster, apparently this is where the trainee guides fall in, catapulted over the length of the raft as it hits the hole at the bottom of the slope! A quick whistle blast to warn the daredevil kayakers playing in the maelstrom below, and we're off. "Lean in, hold on!" he shouts, the raft fills with water and momentarily stops in the hole, but then we are through and paddling hard to the safety of another eddy. We are half way and the hardest drop is yet to come!" White Water Rafting in North Wales is available at two locations (the text above describes a session on the River Tryweryn at Bala) |
