Explore White Water Open Canoeing - 2 Day Course

If you have ever fancied getting to grips with open canoeing then this is definitely the course for you! These two days are totally focused on you being able to pick your own way down a river, as opposed to being pushed by the flow! You will learn a lot, do lots of paddling, and unless you’re superhuman, your muscles will ache for a while after. We love this course – it’s paddling at its best. Throughout the two days you will have flat-water sessions, some theory, and lots and lots of river time! This course is for those who are fairly new to the sport, have held a paddle, floated around and loved it, but desperately want to increase the tempo!

Activity-only                                    £210pp
Incl. 2 nights Bunkhouse B&B      £260pp
Incl. 2 nights Basic 2 Star B&B     £280pp
Incl. 2 nights Luxury 3 Star B&B   £320pp

Wilderness Trips - For more information click here

The canoe is the craft that has been used by generations to travel across vast tracts of wilderness. Its ability to carry you and a huge amount of gear is something that we utilise on this course. Firstly, your guide will show you how to pack your boat, looking at trim and lashing styles, then we will be off - seeing amazing views, getting close to nature, and learning new skills. Upon landing you will see and learn new and different ways to set up camp, and to cook on an open fire. We will demonstrate methods of fire-lighting by friction, and you will, of course, get to try this art form for yourself! Two-day or five-day options available.

Travel writer and photographer Lucinda Manouch joined us on one of our wilderness trips on Loch Shiel in 2008 - you can read her review of the trip here!

The minimum age for all the dates shown below is 14 years. All Under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible parent or guardian.

Available on any date throughout the year

North Wales - 2 Days (1 night camping) £260pp

Scotland - 5 Days (4 nights camping) £525pp

Traditional Skills

The canoe has been used by most indigenous peoples the world over, the reason for this is its versatile nature, the ability to paddle down rapids, along long flat lakes and carry lots of gear.  BUT what truly makes it versatile is the fact that you can use a pole to go up rapids, or down shallow rapids, you can use a sail to make those flat sections easier. Ropes attached via bridals allow you to "fly" the canoe up or down rapids, and ultimately there is the fact that it is easily carried (portaged) around rapids.

Our Traditional Skills courses are aimed at getting you happy with moving a canoe around in a variety of ways, not just with a paddle.  This can be done as a half day, full day or a weekend course.

The half day will mainly be on flat water, looking at basic poling, and rope control, and how to rig a a basic downwind sailing rig

The full day will be based around moving water looking at poling around the river tracking and lining up and down rapids and we will look at more complex rafted sailing.

The two day course will have a one day of a similar structure as the one day course, but the second day will be on a local lake where we can try out sailing, solo and rafted, plus using ropes to get round windy headlands, and pole up and down rivers that run into the lake.
