BCU 1-3 Star Awards

Rock Climbing with ProAdventure

1 Star
2 Star
3 Star Kayak
3 Star Open Canoe

The aim of the BCU Star awards is to show your progression along the skill ladder of paddlesport. They are assessed awards with the syllabus being laid down by the governing body of canoeing in the UK the BCU.  These awards are of two types, generic and specific. The first two (1 and 2 star) are generic, so they are trained and assessed in both canoes and kayaks.  The last three (3 4 and 5 star) are specific to a discipline so you get trained and assessed in which ever craft (canoe, Kayak, sea or surf) you prefer, or do them in all types of craft.

At ProAdventure we take canoe and kayak skills training seriously, as we feel that by giving you the best training possible, we will open many doors to you in the future to take your boat and go to places you never thought you could get to.  Because of this ethos, we use our highest qualified instructors to train you at all the levels, so you get the best instruction right from the start.  Our courses are aimed at giving you the broadest skill base in all paddle sports craft.

Why do Star tests? Why not just learn to paddle? Well the way the star tests are set up is that you get a training course that covers all the important skills, as we said in a variety of craft, this will make you a much better paddler then just going out paddling. Also some centres that hire boats only hire them to people with star tests, and some white water sites only let you paddle if you have a skill level equivalent to certain star awards.

So you may as well get a star test as you learn to paddle?

Give us a call to discuss your personal requirements or book onto one of our running courses as detailed below.

1 Star

This is the course that sets you off on your way as a paddler(canoeist or kayaker). WE will look at the basics of how to fit your personal gear. Buoyancy aids, helmets, spray deck etc, What paddle and boat to choose, how to adjust all the fittings in the boat so that you are comfy, create power easily and can control the boat. Then we look at the skills of paddling, including forwards, backwards, turning, stopping, steering, sideways and getting in and out safely.

This one day, 1 star course is run in canoes and kayaks, so that you learn the best way to control a craft floating on the water.  On top of gaining the one star award, you will spend a gorgeous day messing about on water in a variety of boats. Its a great fun safe introduction to the sport.

2 Star

The BCU two star award is the entry requirement to become a paddlesports coach. This award is trained and assessed over two days allowing plenty of time for progression and improvement. The aim of the 2 star test is to show that you have control over a canoe and kayak on sheltered water.  Basically put, this means that we look at the skills needed to move your canoe/kayak around easily and gracefully, but more importantly we get you to be able to decide how to modify those skills depending on the weather and what you want the boat to do.

This is all about being a Paddler, not just someone who sits in a boat and floats about. Our instructors will use their experience to take you from where you are and get you up to the standard to pass. This is a fantastic two days working hard on the water, learning skills and theory but having a lot of fun in the process

Duration - 2 days combined Training and Assessment

Pre-Requisites -Suitable for anyone interested in paddlesports and has been in a boat before.
