| BCU 1-3 Star Awards
| 1 Star | The 1 Star award is a flat water award which will show that the paddler has basic boat control skills. The 1 Star award can be taken in either a Kayak (sit-on-top or closed cockpit) or an Open Canoe.

| 2 Star | The 2 Star award is a flat water skills improvement award which looks at skills generic to both Kayaks and Open Canoes and how the boat, paddle and water relate to create the desired movement of the boat. The 2 Star award is a pre-requisite for those who want to complete the Level 1 Coach course.
| Duration - 2 days combined Training and Assessment | Pre-Requisites - None, suitable for anyone interested in paddlesports

| 3 Star Kayak | The 3 Star Kayak award is a white water and skills award which will train you to be at home in your boat and to perform competently on both flat and moving water. A 3 Star award (Kayak or Open Canoe) is a pre-requisite for those who want to complete the Level 2 Coach course. | Duration - 2 days Training (non-obligatory but advised) and 2 days Assessment. | Pre-Requisites - Experience of paddling on grade 2 white water. | 3 Star Open Canoe | The 3 Star Open Canoe will train you to become competent on open water in low wind conditions and on simple moving water, enabling you to journey confidently. A 3 Star award (Kayak or Open Canoe) is a pre-requisite for those who want to complete the Level 2 Coach course. | Duration - 2 days Training (non-obligatory, but advised) and 2 days Assessment. | Pre-Requisites for Assessment - Evidence of undertaking at least 3 journeys in an Open Canoe of approx. 10km each.
